Our Time to Sing

by Kim Villalva

46 And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

–Luke 1:46-47, 54-55

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”
“Silent Night”
“Joy to the World”

Did you ever go Christmas caroling? How about singing Christmas songs while decorating your tree?

These familiar songs have stood the test of time. We sing in church. We sing in the car. We sing in the store. We sing at Christmas parties. Despite society’s fads, technology advances and political strife, we still find these songs waiting for us each Christmas. No other holiday but Christmas gives us quite the same way to express immense joy and thanksgiving through songs like these.

“Mary’s song,” often referred to as The Magnificat, occurs right after she greets her cousin Elizabeth, who exclaims that upon hearing Mary’s words, “…the babe in my womb leaped for joy…” (Luke 1:44). Mary realizes God is at work doing great things for her and His people and she rejoices by magnifying His name with her entire being.

Mary’s song can be our song this Advent season. The songs we sing with our co-workers, the ones we sing as we navigate the hustle and bustle of the holiday season are our opportunities for celebrating the promise of a Savior. We sing to give thanks. We sing to remember God’s faithfulness to His people. We sing to celebrate the promise fulfilled–the birth of the Christ Child.

Even if we start to grow weary of hearing those Christmas carols playing repeatedly on the radio, let our renewed voices drown out all that distracts us from rejoicing in the coming of the Messiah!

My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my SaviorLuke 1:46-47

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, let our praise to You be personal this Christmas. Let us find time throughout the busy season to always give You thanks for our many blessings, including how You are using us to love and serve others. Amen.
