“My heart exults in the Lord;
my strength is exalted in my God.
My mouth derides my enemies,
because I rejoice in my victory.
–1 Samuel 2:1
After we lost our second baby in 2013, I questioned God. I didn’t understand why, after such a difficult journey to conceive after our first loss three years earlier, He would not see this miracle all the way through. Why had our second pregnancy ended so soon after it began? I just didn’t understand God’s answer to my prayer.
As I read and studied Hannah’s story, I was amazed at the depths of her faith despite the lack of support she received from other women, and even her husband. She took everything she had to God-her despair, her hopes, and her thanks for what He would do for her. Talk about faith!
Recently, I met a woman who had just lost a baby. Ironically, her story was identical to mine. She asked over and over when could she expect the tears to stop falling. As we talked, I found myself thanking God that He allowed me to serve Him in this way. Somehow, I was at the right place at the right time and in my weakness, God’s greatness could be shown…healing would come.
Hannah trusted in God’s faithfulness and rejoiced in her son, Samuel. She gave thanks for this new thing God had not only done for her but for what He would do for His people. Samuel…David…Jesus. All in God’s perfect timing.
Like Hannah, we have the same opportunity to praise God and to trust Him to work in us while we wait. What new thing might God be doing in our lives as He answers our prayers?
As we prepare for Christ’s coming, let’s be ready to share how our faith has anchored us in hope and love with those who need it most this holiday season.
O Lord, thank you for turning our sorrows into opportunities to show your grace and mercy. Lead us to share our weaknesses with others, that they might find strength in You. Amen.
