Finally, brothers and sisters, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God (as, in fact, you are doing), you should do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification…
–1 Thessalonians 4:1-3
Paul wrote this letter to the church in Thessalonica who apparently was experiencing some difficulties. He encouraged them, commended them, and offered some suggestions to perhaps help them through their difficulties. I believe we need this kind of help more than ever today.
Most of us have heard the exultation to keep Christ in Christmas. I believe we should instead strive to keep US IN CHRISTMAS. With the commercialization of every season today, it is very difficult not to get caught up in some part of that frenzy. To avoid that, I believe that all we need to do is look back at the first people to greet and worship Jesus for our inspiration. The shepherds came after angels told them of Jesus’ birth. They came to the stable to bow down and worship this baby who was our Lord and Savior. The Magi saw a star that announced Jesus’ birth, followed it and brought gifts to lay before the King the star had announced.
We have an advantage over our ancient comrades – we know the end of the story. We should ask ourselves each day how we can help prepare ourselves and our community for this Advent. The celebration comes when we arrive before our Lord and Savior on bended knee to worship him. Come, Lord Jesus.
Heavenly Father, help us see through the fog and frenzy of the day and focus on the beginning of this story, the arrival of your Son who you sent to save us all. Amen.
